UCT students deface Jan Smuts statue [pic]
Posted by on Feb 16th, 2016

Last year the #RhodesMustFall protests resulted in the permanent removal of the Cecil John Rhodes statue at the University of Cape Town and yesterday students defaced the statues of Jan Smuts and Maria Emmeline Barnard Fuller on the UCT campus, saying they were symbols of white repression. Both statues were spray painted red.

According to News 24, student leader Masixole Mlandu said “We were brutally murdered by this person” and “I think if you look at the genealogy of segregation and apartheid itself, it emanates from what Jan Smuts would call institutional segregation.”

Earlier in the day some students erected shacks at the bottom of the Jameson steps saying that those on waiting-lists for campus accomodation were being turned away in favour of white students.
