Mixed reactions yesterday to news that social media giant Twitter is planning on increasing its 140 character tweet limit to allow users to post tweets with up to 10 000 characters. You can already send Direct Messages on Twitter that are 10 000 characters long so its not a complete surprise. According to sources the new feature may be introduced by the end of the first quarter of 2016 and will likely see your timeline unchanged except for an option to see more of the tweet if it’s longer than the current 140 characters.
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey tweeted the following yesterday which further fueled speculation that a longer tweet option was coming soon.
Mmmmm i’m not so sure hey. Clearly they have done their homework and research would indicate that it is a wise move, but some users are already complaining.
I reckon if they indeed go with the same format and introduce an option where you can read the longer tweet then there really isn’t much difference. I doubt people are gonna be writing 2000 word essays and it would save sending multiple tweets in a row to get your message across.
“Twitter is building a new feature that will allow users to tweet things longer than the traditional 140-character limit, and the company is targeting a launch date toward the end of Q1, according to multiple sources familiar with the company’s plans. Twitter is currently considering a 10,000 character limit, according to these sources. ” [re/code]
