Jurie Roux, Saru chief executive, has outlined a transformation plan where players of colour will make up half the Springbok team by 2019. The strategic plan aimed at transforming rugby by the 2019 World Cup in Japan includes Currie Cup and Super Rugby teams as well, but Roux insists it’s not a quota system.
Roux announced details of the plan yesterday and said the SA coaching mindset must change and do it’s part in transformation.
“Saru chief executive Roux announced details of the plan yesterday, which has been created to achieve a target that will see players of colour make up half of all teams at Currie Cup, Super Rugby and international levels by 2019, when the Rugby World Cup will take place in Japan.”
“Saru president Oregan Hoskins said in a statement: “It is definitely not only about the number of black players on the field. It has six focus areas: demographic representation; access to the game; skills and capacity development; performance; community development and social responsibility; and corporate governance.” [iol]
