Ok so it’s no secret that i love Cape Town and while there is no shortage of bragging rights with us winning numerous best city in the world type awards, we can’t expect everything to be perfect all the time. Case in point…the newly revealed City Of Cape Town logo that is taking a beating on social media for being…well kak. And there’s also some controversy surrounding how much it cost, but more othat further down

I had a quick look at online sentiment and reactions have ranged from childish to downright hideous.

But let’s not be so quick to judge hey. Let’s have a look and see you think?

And here’s some of the top comments on Twitter.

Ya not ideal reactions hey.

And as for the price.

In response to questions about the tender awarded in December for a branding agency, the city said no tender was awarded to a value of R8m.

This figure, the city said, had been based on past spend for above-the-line services by the city, and was used for participating agencies to express their commission based on the estimated spend for supply chain management to have comparative costing.

Reddy said reports that the new logo would cost millions of rand were misleading, since the associated cost was R313 720.

City insiders have, however, estimated that it could cost the city an estimated R100m to implement its new corporate identity, which would appear on everything from stationery, depots, uniforms and vehicles, to municipal bills and public signage.” [iol]

So what’s your verdict?

In tough world economic times there are far more useful things to be spend this kind of money on. It’s not the cost to the design agency, it’s making the new logo visible that is just pissing money against the wall, the lamp post, the city officials uniform, the stationary cupboard, etc, etc.

It looks REVOLTING !

If they didn’t know how to design – they could have made a graphic design competition (it also would have been a lot cheaper than R 300 000) – to find a graphic designer with a winning imagination and creativity to design something worth noting.
