New study: Cape Town will reach it’s climate tipping point as early as 2038 [map]
Posted by on Oct 10th, 2013

Can you ever imagine a scenario where the coolest average yearly temperature in Cape Town will be warmer that the hottest yearly temperature between 1960 and 2005? Well some science folks actually worked that out and you’ll probably still be alive when it happens. Cape Town will hit ‘climate departure’ in 2038…the date when the average temperature of its coolest year from then on is projected to be warmer than the average temperature of its hottest year between 1960 and 2005.

The study was published in the scientific journal Nature and mentions that Earth as a whole will experience climate departure in 2047 if carbon dioxide emissions are not lowered. Here’s a map of countries which will undergo ‘climate depature’ and the projected dates of when it can be expected.
