Remember the donkey meat scandal…the SA one where researchers at Stellenbosch University discovered that donkey, goat and water buffalo were found in up to 68% of South African meat products tested HERE. Well up until now the scientists have kept the source of the meat samples confidential, but a request by the Red Meat Industry Forum and Media 24 under the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) leave Stellenbosch University with no option but to reveal the information.
I’m guessing a whole bunch of retailers and meat processors are a tad concerned.
What will you do if you find out that the meat you’ve been buying for years contains a bit of ass?
“The University of Stellenbosch told Business Day it would comply with the request by the forum and Media 24 despite the wishes of researchers to keep the information confidential.
University senior research and innovation director Therina Theron said the purpose of the study was not to “name and shame” meat processors and retailers.” [News24]
And what will the consequences be..surely releasing the names will be damaging to their business.
