PETA wanna put up this billboard about shark attacks…assholes [WTF]
Posted by on Sep 29th, 2011

I’ve said this countless times before and i will say it again…i’m 100% behind anyone who campaigns against animal cruelty, but when PETA does sh*t like this i’m convinced it does more harm than good.

In light of the recent shark attack in Fish Hoek this latest sensational attempt at drawing attention to animal rights is even more relevant.

Look at this billboard the PETArds wanna erect.

This has nothing to do with the recent attack in Cape Town, but rather with an incident in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Anna Maria Island where a man was bitten by a bull shark.

“A man who was reportedly bitten by a 9-foot bull shark while fishing off of the coast of Anna Maria Island on Saturday is now the target of a vicious outdoor advertising campaign on bus benches and billboards in and around Manatee County.

As the friends who helped save his life were interviewed on national television and C.J. Wickersham was recovering after getting 700 to 800 stitches in his leg at Bayfront Medical Center, PETA was completing the design of its anti-fishing campaign featuring a shark swimming with a bloody human leg in its mouth. Come now PETA. You’re better than this.

Yes, it’s in the news again now, but they first released this ad back in 2008:

Ahh so they just rehashing old stuff. Typical. So whenever someone gets bitten by a shark they just bring that up? Sigh. I remember posting something way back about a billboard they put up about a kid eating a hamburger that said” feeding kids meat is child abuse”. Also didn’t go down too well.

While I don’t agree with the practice of shark-finning, coming from a city where there was a near fatal shark attack just yesterday (, I fail to see what this ad is meant to achieve.

Firstly, it does shark PR (already in a bit of a dip for obvious aforementioned reasons) no favours whatsoever: there’s nothing like the image of a severed human leg to reinforce negative imagery around these animals.

Secondly, it suggests that the shark population is out for some bizarre type of revenge. Well, perhaps the odd one that rears up on the deck of a fishing vessel and fights back, but shark populations generally? No.
That’s a ridiculous suggestion.

Thirdly, who is this aimed at? Shark fishermen?
Who knows, maybe they’ll think twice next time they’re about to set sail, but like it or not, that’s their livelihood right there.
Or beach goers? While I’m aware that there may be some small degree of crossover between these groups, I can’t help but feel that they’re barking up the wrong tree if they’re somehow suggesting that people must go vegan to lessen their chances of being attacked when swimming?

Nope – when you look at this crass ad, I think it’s pretty clear that this is utterly stupid – start to finish.

I fucking love animals really, we should treat them ethically and not mistreat even those that end up as hamburgers BUT every fucking time PETA spreads their dumb senseless propaganda I just want to take the nearest bunny rabbit and stomp on it’s head on a curb American History X style.
