Pic of the day: The “Seed Cathedral” in Shanghai
Posted by on Feb 23rd, 2010

Here’s one for all you design and architecture types out there.

The Seed Cathedral is the centerpiece of the UK Pavillion at the Shanghai World Expo in China. The £25 million structure is 60 feet high and is covered with 60 000 transparent rods that quiver in the wind.

Okay, what’s with the seeds? Why?

Hi Cilleen..good question. Did some checking for you and the designer had this to say: “It draws on a scheme called the Millennium Seedbank run by the Royal Botanical Society at Kew Gardens. They are gathering a seed from every plant in the world to store and catalogue.”
So each one of the 60 000 acrylic rods contains a sealed seed in the tip.
