South Africa angry at Jennifer Hudson being cast as Winnie Mandela
Posted by on Dec 8th, 2009

Jennifer Hudson (American Idol & Dreamgirl) has apparently been cast to play Winnie Mandela in a new movie called Winnie and its causing quite the uproar in South Africa.

Members of the Creative Workers Union in SA reckon that the role should be played by a local star and not Jennifer Hudson.

“Agence France Presse is reporting that South African actors are up in arms over the casting of Jennifer Hudson as Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in “Winnie,” an upcoming film by veteran South African director Darrell J. Roodt. The Creative Workers Union of South Africa said using foreign actors to tell the country’s stories undermined efforts to develop the national film industry.” [ more at hollywoodwiretap]

Union chief Oupa Lebogo (enjoy that why don’t you) told The Times the following:

“This decision must be reversed, it must be stopped now. If the matter doesn’t come up for discussion, we will push for a moratorium to be placed on the film being cast in South Africa. We are being undermined, there is no respect at all.”

Is this really a big deal Oupa?

I don’t see an issue here.

Morgan Freeman is playing Nelson Mandela in the upcoming “Invictus” and so what if Winnie is played by Jennifer Hudson.

What do you think. Feel like throwing your 2 cents into the mix?
