• Best Of Cape Town 2012
Posted by on Apr 4th, 2012

Right…been thinking about a new page for the blog and finally decided to put it in motion. So listen up because it involves you fine folks from Cape Town and the rest of South Africa.

In a nutshell…i have asked two legends in @concierge_ryan and @Jodenecoza to help me establish a crowd sourced list of the best Cape Town has to offer. Basically a go-to list for anyone wanting to know where in Cape Town they can find for example the best burger, or pizza or coffee or place that plays the best old school rock music etc. Now i know what you’re gonna say…there are already lists like that or restaurant reviews on several websites. Here’s the thing though…they are all made by so called ‘experts’ in the industry and are seldom unbiased. What we are trying to achieve is a people’s choice of what the best places are through social networks like Twitter and Facebook and here on Life is Savage.

Because why?…..locals know best that’s why.

I’m tired of reading that the best restaurant in Cape Town is blah blah according to some foreign magazine or website. What the f**k do they know? I want insider info..the word on the street.

And if you think this is gonna be a list of only food then think again…i want to make it as extensive and quirky as possible. So future categories will include things like best bar to pick up cougars or cheapest drinks or best sunset bar or best looking staff . And we can even get crazy and throw in some completely off the wall topics like best gatsby or slap chips or best place to find a sugar daddy. The wilder the topic the better…where in CT would you go the best massage with a happy ending etc? People wanna know stuff like that!

So every week i’ll throw out a new category and see what folks say on the social networks and on here. I’ll give it a week and then post the results in a top 5 or top 10 list. Each place that made the list will have include contact details and website links if they have one. The list can be updated at anytime depending on whether places close or new ones open up.

So without further messing about here’s the list of the Best Of Cape Town 2012 as voted for by you.

I USED to agree with your top spot until I discovered SushiBox in Newlands. Its like Willoughby’s and Takumi combined, with better prices and the freshest fish you’ll find.

If youre a sushi lover do yourself a favour and give them a try.

Cool, will go and try them all. Hope this list is not in order of greatness. In my opinion, Willoughby is totally overrated. I think their sushi is good, no wow factor, and that’s it. The location is terrible and there is always a queue. No mention of any places in the Northern Subs? Well there are a couple of places. You can put Yo Eastern Fusion in Welgelegen, 021 5589888 at no. 11 then.

    Dominique says:
    April 04, 2012 at 4:11 pm

Disappointing that there’s nothing out Durbanville way… We like sushi too! I personally love Waka Yama in Sonstraal, Durbanville. R100 for all you can eat sushi, rarely any queues and the food is GOOD!

    April 04, 2012 at 4:11 pm

yeah, only cape town CBD places. Stellenbosch one mention. It’s because the majority of the people come from around there.
Ive been to alot of awesome Sushi places in Northern Subs and even Strand and Gordon’s Bay side.

Its all about where the masses are from who put there nominations in ;)

Dude – how can you even put Spur in that list?
It is like comparing me to Bill Gates in terms of cash flow.
    Come on now!

    Savage says:
    April 04, 2012 at 4:11 pm

My bad…would have loved to include another restaurant, but the Spur got mentioned several times. And to be honest i rather quite like the Cheese mushroom burger! Always have one at the airport before i leave SA. That cheesy mushroom suace with onion rings is awesome!

    Chilli poppers…
    1. Pancho’s, obz
    2. Joe Fish, pinelands (chilli prawn poppers.. i mean come on)
    3. Rafikis
    4. the shack (not sure if they still do them)
    5. Banana Jam

    Jamie says:
    April 04, 2012 at 4:11 pm

I have only ever had Hudsons burgers at the Cape Town Festival of beer and I must say, I was not very impressed, but Saints on Kloof has seriously set the bar high. I’m talking 6 craft beers on tap, buns made on site and they apparently even grind their own meat. The effort definitely shows in the taste!

Vida e at big bay has terrible coffee. Actually, there is no realy good coffee (or food) at Big Bay. (Eden on the Bay)
Dont waste your money there. It’s all a ripoff. Have tried and tried.

Nice sunset views tho, but Blue Peter has them too, and better Pizza.

    neal says:
    April 04, 2012 at 4:11 pm

Yeah, I’m with Mike on this. Eden on the bay… how to milk wannabe surfers and beach bums, whilst not getting their feet wet. Really, so many bad restaurants in one place, it’s difficult to comprehend.

    April 04, 2012 at 4:11 pm

Willoughby is definately excellent, I don’t want to hear any bashing. Part of their success is that they don’t have a nice sea view, so the prices are good.
The atmosphere inside is great, and with the lady giving free tastings from the wine shop next door, it feels friendly and fun.
The retail fish counter at the back is a must visit…the guys know their stuff, and they get some quite exotic fish there…saw them wheeling in a 6ft tuna one day, and had the tuna steak on rice.
One of my favourite places…and if there is a queue, it means there is something worth queuing for…

Number 9, ho-hos in Kenridge is completely overrated. I went there once to see what all the hype was about and was left sorely disappointed. The chow mein isnt made fresh and had clearly been standing in the metal containers all day long- tasted like salted rubber.

For all those dissing Spur, something has to be said for consistency. Might not be the best steak/burger joint, but at least you know what you gonna get. As previously mentioned, nothing wrong with a goodie burger in transit! I do think though that the Steenburger at Bistro1682, is the best burger in Cape Town. They only do them on Friday lunch and only 10, so preorder, Kyoto Garden Sushi, like stepping into Japan, the best overall Japenese, very traditional, so no bastardized sushi, Burrata the best Italian and Nobu (albeit over priced) the best overall Asian. Carne, also pricey, but incredible meat, Curry Quest in Durban Road, the best Durban curry you’ll find in the suburbs, Fat Cactus in Mowbray, still make the best poppers, even though Mexicans actually do not even know what chili poppers are, Espresso lab are by far the best roasters, do yourself a favourite and order a Cortado, either there or from Nash at Dear Me. Just my 2 cents…..sorry catching up to do as I just found Life is Savage!
