The department of basic education in South Africa issued a circular last week stating that grade 7, 8 and 9 learners in the country who have passed all their other subjects except Mathematics will still be promoted to the next grade provided they got more than 20% in Math. The current pass mark stands at 40%, but a special dispensation has been approved where those that pass everything except Math will only need to achieve more than 20% to be promoted.
The reason given for the drop to 20% was to ‘accommodate learners whose promotion to the next grade may be adversely affected by the compulsory requirement of passing Mathematics at level 3 (40%)”
“There are learners who are passing all their subjects, six of their seven subjects but failing mathematics. And as a consequence, particularly in grade 9, they fail their standard because mathematics has now become a compulsory pass subject.” [EWN]
Now you know.
