With just 11km of the Olympic women’s cycling road race to go, leader Annemiek van Vleuten had the gold medal in her sights before crashing on the treacherous decent at high speed. Van Vleuten came off her bike on a corner and hit a curb, fracturing 3 of her vertebrae and left her concussed.

“I am now in the hospital with some injuries and fractures, but will be fine,” Van Vleuten said on Twitter.

The cycling course in Rio has been described by many as being dangerous for the riders after several serious crashes on the downhill section.
