If you’ve seen Captain America: Civil War then you may have wondered why the Black Panther sounds familiar. Well it’s because his character speaks Xhosa. The character is the prince of a fictional land of Wakanda and the language is based on Xhosa. You don’t even need subtitles if you speak Xhosa to understand him. Chadwick Boseman who plays Black Panther in the film speaks English (with an accent) to all the other characters apart from his father King T’Chaka to who he speaks in his native language. According to director Joe Russo “The language we used for Wakandan is called Xhosa”.
Here’s Chadwick Boseman explaining how it is that the Black Panther speaks Xhosa.
I couldn’t find a clip of the Black Panther speaking Xhosa, but here’s a brief moment of him saying ‘I don’t care’ at the 11 second mark
Was kinda hoping he’d say ‘Tsek wena’.
The Black Panther stand alone spin off movie is due out at the end of the year.
