It’s been a while since a South African film got internationally recognised, but the soon to be released Free State has just picked up another award for best cinematography in New York. The film starring SA born model Nicola Breytenbach and Andrew Govender won the award at the Garden State Film Festival after winning best director at the Luxor African Film Festival. The plot of the movie is described as ‘A random act of kindness sparks a forbidden love affair between a white girl and an Indian man during the Apartheid system in South Africa’.
