Saw plenty of South African Netflix users complain yesterday about not being able to watch certain shows because they are getting error notices or messages saying that a proxy has been detected. This is the case if you are a South African Netflix user, but use an unblocker or proxy like UnoTelly to mask your location and get access to the US catalogue of Netflix. Not all SA users seem to be blocked though and it’s unclear why certain platforms and not others are getting cut off.
Those who have been blocked can only select content from the SA version.
People use proxies to hide their geographical location that will allow them to watch content from other countries that isn’t available in their own due to licencing agreements.
Netflix has made in clear about a month ago that it will be combating the use of proxies or VPN services
“Some members use proxies or “unblockers” to access titles available outside their territory. To address this, we employ the same or similar measures other firms do. This technology continues to evolve and we are evolving with it. That means in coming weeks, those using proxies and unblockers will only be able to access the service in the country where they currently are. We are confident this change won’t impact members not using proxies.” [NETFLIX]
There are several proxies other than UnoTelly that still work, but you need to go search for them yourself.
Now you know.
