Budget 2016 – SA to introduce sugar tax on the following types of items

Ok so if you read my previous post then you will know that yesterday Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan delivered his 2016 Budget Speech and amoungst other things he said that sin taxes are increasing so you’ll be paying more for a packet of cigarettes as well as beer, wine and spirits. To see how much they will be increasing click HERE. Gordhan also said that SA will be introducing a new sugar tax to curb obesity.

The new tax will be on sugar sweetened beverages and will kick in April 2017.

Now what exactly are sugar sweetened beverages. Well it’s beverages that include added sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, brown sugar, corn sweetener, corn syrup, dextrose, fruit juice concentrate, glucose, honey, invert sugar,
molasses, sucrose, syrup or cane sugar.

Here’s a list of items that you will be paying more for.

– non-diet soft drinks/sodas (Coke, Fanta etc.)
– flavored juices
– sports drinks (Energade etc.)
– sweetened tea
– sweetened coffee drinks
– energy drinks (Monster, Red Bull etc.)
– electrolyte replacement drinks (Vitamin Water etc.)
