SA naval commander explains why SA has submarines…to deter sharks [VIDEO]
Posted by on Feb 23rd, 2016

It was the Armed Forces Day parade in Port Elizabeth on Sunday (21 February) and president Zuma was there to hand out medals to members of our armed forces. The SABC had a live news feed of proceedings, but please enjoy the moment a naval commander explains the advantage of South Africa having submarines. According to him we have them to deter sharks. No really.

Cut to the 24 min mark and let this commander make you you understand why we have submarines.

I can’t anymore.

submarines for sharks

Wonder if Zuma gave him a medal.

[thanks Brennan]

UPDATE: some people have pointed out that he may have been using sharks as a metaphor and that what he actually meant was that our submarines are the sharks and the deterrent to other countries. I see where they are coming from, but im not entirely convinced. Props though for keeping our country safe.

No. He is comparing the deterrent effect of SA having submarines to that of there being sharks in the sea or river.
You wouldn’t swim in water if you knew there were sharks there.
You wouldn’t invade territorial waters if you knew that there were submarines there.
