A South African chef has been awarded a prestigious Michelin Star. Not in SA though. Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen was awarded the much sought after accolade for his restaurant in France. Van der Westhuizen was raised in Mpumalanga before moving to Cape Town and then eventually opening Restaurant Jan in Nice, France.
Ok so techically it’s not on South African soil, but he’s from SA and still comes to Cape Town often so we’ll claim it. The first South African to be awarded a Michelin Star if i’m not mistaken.
Well done Jan Hendrik.
“The star was announced on Monday 1 February on the French Michelin guide’s Twitter account, and was one of 52 new stars awarded in 2016.” [Eat Out]
