You should know by now that rapper Yasiin Bey (previously known as Mos Def) has been living in Cape Town and recently made local headlines when he was arrested for having illegal travel documents in the form of a world passport. Well his situation is now going global after Kanye West shared a rap message from Bey about being arrested and detained in South Africa. Bey raps about ‘no more parties in SA’ and goes on to explain that he is ‘currently in Cape Town, South Africa and being prevented from leaving unjustly, unlawfully and without any logical reason’. He also mentions that ‘they want to deport my family’ and givesmore details about the world passport he uses.
The entire KanyeWest.com website is currently this audio message from Bey.
Bey finishes off by saying he is retiring from music with immediate effect.
Now you know.
UPDATE: ok so many people are asking what a world passport is and whether or not it’s legit. So i did some digging and this is what Mos Def is using.
Apparently it is not a fake passport. Well according to the World Service Authority who issues it. The WSA is a non-profit organization and on their website they have several images where the world passport was successfully used to enter South Africa and obtain a visa. Like so.
They do mention though that “the applicant understands that the World Service Authority accepts no responsibility for the position of any government as regards the acceptance of the WSA passport and/or its other identification documents”
It is not recognised in many countries, but for more info check HERE.
UPDATE: the department of home affairs has released an official statement on the matter. The main issue is that he used a travel document (the world passport) that is not recognised in SA and that his wife and child were in the country illegal since their 90 day visitor visas expired in April 2014.
