At the beginning of the year, KZN real estate agent Penny Sparrow hit the headlines for her Facebook posts about ‘monkeys’ on the beach on new years day and radio DJ Gareth Cliff also came under fire for his opinion on the matter. He recieved widespread criticism for his comment that ‘people really don’t understand free speech at all’ and many called for him to be boycotted and for M-Net to remove him as host of Idols South Africa. They eventually released a statement that Cliff won’t be part of the popular show for 2016. Well Cliff has now fired back and is suing M-Net for a reported R25 million for defamation and wrongful dismissal.
Not only is he suing M-Net, but he also wants to be reinstated as an Idols 2016 judge.
“Cliff’s lawyer, Eric Mabuza, confirmed to eNCA that his client was suing M-Net.
“He is suing for R25-million, including for defamation of character.”
Mabuza said the station had fired Cliff without having a “proper hearing”. [EWN]
Now you know.
