Your social media marketing lesson of the day comes courtesy of Crocs, the shoes everyone loves to hate. No matter how comfortable people claim them to be, Crocs already have a reputation as possibly the worst looking shoe in the galaxy so they definitely didn’t need more negative publicity, but nooooooooooo…someone on their social media team decided it was a great idea to capitalize on the death of David Bowie and see if that will stir up some much needed positive sentiment. They quickly found out that trying to use the death of a musical icon as a brand opportunity is a kak idea at best.
Here’s what they came up with.
The tweet was quickly removed after it recieved widespread critisism and ridicule. Fans worldwide changed their profile avatar pictures to put a bolt of lightning across their faces in honour of Bowie’s iconic Aladdin Sane album cover.
Yep…trying to profit from the death of a legend isn’t ideal.
That will learn them.
