Looks like SA’s Elon ‘Tony Stark’ Musk and his Tesla company are planning to build a gigafactory in Cape Town that will produce Powerwall batteries, the home battery that uses solar power. Musk has reportedly been in talks with the Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Renewable Energy and Tesla has recently appointed Evan Rice, ex-chief executive of GreenCape, as business development manager for Tesla South Africa.
The first gigafactory in Nevada is already shipping out Powerwall batteries and apparently they are looking to open another one in SA.
“Western Cape MEC for economic opportunities Alan Winde told Times Live: “We very much want to have a gigafactory here. If we get that right, it will make nuclear power generation obsolete.” [Business Tech]
I wonder where in Cape Town they will build that factory.
