  • Interview with Shaun Duvet, the man behind Ultra SA, on what we can expect from the 2016 festival
Posted by on Nov 6th, 2015

Last week the massive ULTRA SA 2016 phase 1 lineup was announced and South African fans found out that leading the pack will be the legendary Skrillex. Joining him will be the hugely popular Zedd and supporting them will be none other than Robin Schulz, Dash Berlin, and Galantis. The event will also see the addition of the Resistance Stage where Seth Troxler, The Martinez Brothers and local hero Black Coffee will be performing. And that’s just phase 1.

For some more insider info on the much anticipated event and how it began I had a chat with none other than Shaun Duvet, the man responsible for bringing the event to SA.

1: Tell us a bit how Ultra SA started…the moment you realised that it would be a great idea to bring it to SA.

After touring Deadmau5, Swedish House Mafia, Skrillex, Avicii and more me and my team felt that the time was right to bring a festival to the country that will accommodate all of these artists and more. Throughout all the tours and travelling we met some incredible people; some of which were the Ultra Miami team and all just clicked. The rest is history.

2: What has been the biggest change since the first Ultra SA?

Moving into year 3 we are now doing 2 days per city (thats 4 days in total). This is obviously a huge change and we are focused on making the festival bigger and better for everyone that attends.

3: What made you decide to offer overnight camping for the Cape Town leg?

The Cape Town market is no stranger to camping and the venue we host the festival at is perfectly suited to accommodate camping.

4: The phase 1 lineup is crazy..what can else can we expect?

Phase 2 is coming soon. and its BIG!!!

5: Why did you add the Resistance Stage and what can fans expect?

The Resistance stage started in Ultra Miami this year and has since been seen at the likes of Ultra Croatia & Ultra Japan. The sound of the Resistance stage is all about fresh house & techno music. The SA market is very switched onto these styles and we wanted to really do something special by bringing some of the best artists in this genre to perform on the stage.

6: Do you think an SA DJ will ever be a global superstar like Skrillex?

I believe that anything is possible, its all a matter of the time and energy, focus and determination you put behind it. Take Black Coffee for example, globally he is an absolute superstar and is only getting bigger.

7: What tips can you give aspiring SA DJ’s to one day perform at Ultra?

Follow your dreams, work hard, make great music, throw parties, market yourself and create a brand for yourself that will make it impossible for the public not to take notice of.

8: What has been the craziest DJ request you’ve had to deal with. Don’t have to name the DJ just the request on the rider list

I have seen lots of crazy riders in my time, but luckily none too difficult to deal with. Steve Aoki’s was pretty crazy with inflatable boats, animals and of course Cake. Lots of Cake. :)

9: Which DJ would you love to see that you’ve never seen live?

    Daft Punk.

Good times. Can’t wait for phase 2.
