A while back the asshole of the year award was pretty much a done deal after that US dentist killed Cecil the lion, but a new contender has stepped up to the plate. Martin Shkreli, a former hedge fund manager, is the most hated man on the internet right now after his company bought a life-saving drug and raised the price by 5000%. The 32 year old founder of Turing Pharmaceuticals acquired the rights to Daraprim recently for $55million and quickly raised the price of the drug from $13.50 per tablet to $750 per tablet. He said his company needed to make a profit and told pretty much everyone who called him a douchebag to go f**k themselves. Daraprim is used to treat toxoplasmosis which is a particularly serious parasitic infection for AIDS and cancer patients.
And his past isn’t exactly helping.
“Shkreli isn’t just a regular, run-of-the-mill pharmaceutical industry monster. He’s a monster who used to work (of course) in finance, a former hedge funder accused of having tried to manipulate FDA regulations on drug companies whose stocks he was shorting. He was forced out of the last drug company he started, which is now suing him for $65 million. He’s also a probable charlatan who has claimed to have invented his own pharmaceuticals, despite his lack of any medical or scientific education.” [Gawker]
And he isn’t exactly keeping quiet about the price hike either. He has responded on social media to journalists calling them morons.
Gonna be a tight race between him and Walter Palmer.
