There is some confusion as to whether Damian de Allende is a player of colour
Posted by on Sep 1st, 2015

Ok so the Springbok squad for the Rugby World Cup was announced on Friday (my leaked team was spot on by the way HERE) and as expected there are mixed reactions based on current form. That aside though there is of course the inevitable talk of transformation in SA rugby with Heyneke Meyer having to meet the requirement of 30% players of colour in the team…which he did except that some folks can’t agree on whether or not Damian De Allende is considered a player of colour or not. So here we have a national rugby team filled with highly talented players who got to the highest level based on merit and yet they need to deal with this kak. Great way to show them our support hey.

Anyways…the whole Damian De Allende drama now is because the Springbok management listed De Allende as one of the 9 players of colour making up the 30% transformation target, yet his father was quoted as saying they are white in an interview.

Sport24 has updated their article with ‘Despite recent media reports indicating otherwise, it has officially been confirmed to Sport24 that Damian de Allende is considered as a player of colour’.

Some people on social media are still not convinced though.

The article with De Allende’s father mentioning they are white is in Afrikaans.

“Damian se pa, Tony de Allende, wat van Spaanse afkoms is, sê hulle het hulle nog nooit as bruin gesien nie. Hulle is wit.” [Netwerk24]

Enough with this now. Let’s get behind our team and watch them lift the trophy.
