Two of the three devasting wildfires that destroyed large parts of the Cape Peninsula earlier this year were deliberately started according to a forensic report released by the City of Cape Town yesterday. The investigation was conducted by top forensic expert Dr David Klatzow who said that while two of the big fires were deliberate the other was likely caused accidentally.
The fires destroyed several homes and thousands of acres. According to Klatzow:
“the fire that started further south along Scarborough Road could not have been caused by anything else but human activity.
“There were no potential electrical causes present.”
He reached a similar conclusion for the fires that broke out along the slopes of Clovelly.
They were, he said: “Most likely caused by deliberate human agency, with the view of starting a large scale fire.” [News24]
The report has been handed over to the SAPS and charges of arson will be laid in order to catch the culprits.
