Another case of a US policeman shooting an unarmed man has been filmed after someone captured amateur footage of a white officer shooting an unarmed black man 8 times while he was running away. The South Carolina officer has been charged with murder and the video comes on the heels of several controversial cases where US police have been accused of using use lethal force.
“A black man, identified as 50-year-old Walter Scott, breaks away from the white officer. Something falls, and the officer fires eight shots at the man as he runs away. Scott, who appears to be unarmed, drops to the ground.” [CNN]
Warning: the video contains graphic footage.
What’s even more disturbing is that the officer who claimed that Scott took his taser can been seen running back to pick something up after the initial scuffle and then dropping it near the victims body.
“Something — it is not clear whether it is the stun gun — is either tossed or knocked to the ground behind the two men, and Officer Slager draws his gun, the video shows. When the officer fires, Mr. Scott appears to be 15 to 20 feet away and fleeing. He falls after the last of eight shots.
The officer then runs back toward where the initial scuffle occurred and picks something up off the ground. Moments later, he drops an object near Mr. Scott’s body, the video shows.” [Huffington Post]
A lawyer for the officer initially said that “he followed the appropriate policies and procedures”, but apparently that lawyer no longer represents him.
