600 firefighters and volunteers to join and be honoured at the Cape Town Carnival
Posted by on Mar 13th, 2015

I said last week that the City of Cape Town should honour the brave firefighters and volunteers who battled the recent Cape fires should honour them by using the open top red tourist buses and send them down the Argus Cycle Tour route. That never happened, but the City has gone one better and invited 600 firefighters to join the Cape Town Carnival this Saturday. The carnival began during the 2010 Soccer World Cup along the fan walk in Green Point and attracts tens of thousands of spectators.

The City of CT has called on residents to join and salute the heroes.

“We, along with the Cape community, are overwhelmed with gratitude for these heroes who have fought so bravely to protect local lives, nature and property from the devastating fires,” said Cape Town Carnival marketing, media and sponsorship director, Shelley Finch.

“We are calling on everyone to join us in giving them the reception they so richly deserve. This is the time to celebrate our city’s spirit of unity.”

Spectators were encouraged to join in festivities from 4pm, when the fan walk would turn into a pedestrian walkway with food vendors and festive hospitality areas.”[iol]

Get involved.
