PSA: Major banks will issue your smart ID cards from April onwards
Posted by on Feb 19th, 2015

Your old green ID book may soon be a thing of the past as the new smart ID cards start being rolled out. And instead of waiting in long queues at home affairs you will be able to also apply and collect it from your nearest bank branch from April onwards. Well provided you are with Standard Bank, Nedbank and FNB..since they are the only major banks so far to sign the agreement with home affairs. The banks will open a new home affairs kiosk that will take your biometric photograph, automated fingerprint, and electronic signature which will processed and can be collected when ready.

The pilot project with the three banks was expected to begin in April.

“We are quite excited about the fact that the banks have accepted our request to partner with them. It will both lessen the pressure at our offices and increase our ability to utilise the infrastructure of the private sector as partners,” said Gigaba.

“Once the pilot is successful, we can then open up the application for the smart ID card to all South Africans who wish to apply.

“We had limited the applications to 60-year-olds and 16-year-olds.”

Gigaba said the SA Post Office (Sapo) would also be incorporated into the ID application project.” [Fin 24]

Ok so wait…you can only apply if you’re 60 yrs or 16 year old? And you have to be with Standard, Nedbank or FNB?

I’m not the right age and with ABSA then so basically it doesn’t help me for sh*t.

Why did i even write this damn story.
