South African born billionaire, Elon Musk, is planning to unveil a battery capable of powering an average home within the next few months. Musk (the founder of Tesla, Space X, PayPal) said the consumer battery for use in houses or businesses has already been designed and production would take place in the next 6 months. No word yet if the current power crisis in SA was an inspiration for the technology, but maybe Eskom should give the man a call to get some tips.
In an interview at the end of last year Musk said ‘“Some will be like the Model S pack: something flat, 5 inches off the wall, wall mounted, with a beautiful cover, an integrated bi-directional inverter, and plug and play.”
And yesterday Musk told analysts
“We are going to unveil the Tesla home battery, the consumer battery that would be for use in people’s houses or businesses fairly soon,”
“We have the design done, and it should start going into production in about six months or so,” [Bloomberg]
No idea how much it would cost and whether it would be available in SA.
