  • Bernie Ecclestone confirms he wants to bring F1 to Cape Town in 2016
Posted by on Jan 22nd, 2015

    UPDATE:

The possibility of an F1 Grand Prix in Cape Town is getting closer. The CEO of Cape Town Grand Prix South Africa, Igshaan Amlay, confirmed that talks with Bernie Ecclestone took place 2 months ago and that they have recieved support and approval from the City of Cape Town. The city had previously rejected the proposal.

“Two years ago, the city rejected the Formula One proposal because of the noise issues and cost involved in building the necessary infrastructure. But Amlay said: “The city has changed the way it sees events; they are now a potential opportunity for investment. We are glad they have changed their mind.”

In its initial bid, Cape Town Grand Prix proposed a street circuit that would make full use of the stadium with cars racing through the structure. The route could include Beach Road and the V&A Waterfront.” [iol]

Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has confirmed that he is looking to bring F1 Grand Prix racing back to South Africa as early as 2016 with Cape Town being the preferred venue. Lewis Hamilton’s father Anthony has been working for the past year to bring F1 back to SA and Ecclestone has said they are in the process of proposing terms.

How rad would that be if they actually had the Grand Prix around the stadium and down Beach Road.

“Ecclestone is currently in the process of proposing terms for the country to again figure on the schedule, hopefully from 2016, and significantly with Cape Town the venue.

Speaking to Press Association Sport, Ecclestone said: “I’ve been looking to go back to South Africa for a long time, and now we have a good chance.

“They’re getting on with it. We’re hoping to be back in 2016, but we will have a look and see. We’ll see how we get on.”[BT Sport]

    Make it happen Bernie.
