An online petition calling for the removal of Joshua Broomberg, the deputy headboy of King David Victory Park School in Johannesburg, has already recieved over a thousand signatures after a photo of him wearing a Palestinian scarf was posted on Facebook. The photo was captioned with the words “Team South Africa wearing Palestinian badges and Keffiyehs to show our opposition to the human rights violations carried out against the people of Palestine.” The online petition calling for his removal stated that he is “bringing the school into disrepute” and was started by an anonymous person going by ‘Concerned Zionist’.
A counter petition has been started by former head boys and girls asking people to cease attacking Broomberg and the school has stated it will not be pressurized by the initial petition to suspend him.
That’s the image that was posted on the Facebook public forum.
“Close to 1,500 people have signed an online petition calling on the school to remove Joshua Broomberg
of all leadership roles as deputy head boy and member of the SRC.
This is after a photo of him wearing a Palestinian scarf and colours in the form of a badge was posted on his Facebook page.”
“Former leaders of the school’s SRC have come out in support of Broomberg saying silencing young people is not in the spirit of the Jewish community and freedom of conscience and expression should be treasured.” [EWN]
