A new campaign ad for Feed A Child SA, meant to raise awareness about malnutrition, has been withdrawn from television after complaints and critisism. The NGO has issued an apology saying it was not intended to cause harm to anyone. The controversial ad shows a white woman feeding a black child like a pet and caused outrage on social media. It ends with the words ‘The average domestic dog eats better than millions of children’ followed by a message to donate money and help feed a starving child.
Here’s the ad.
Ad agency Ogilvy has also apologised to those who found the ad distasteful, but added that ‘While clearly designed to have the viewer sit up and take notice, it was never anyone’s intention to cause offence, but rather raise awareness for what is a massive societal issue in SA,” [Mark Lives]
