Defending champions Spain crash out of Fifa World Cup 2014 in the first round
Posted by on Jun 19th, 2014

Spain, defending champions and the kings of football for the past 6 years, have crashed out of the World Cup 2014 in the group stage. After being hammered 5-1 by the Netherlands in their opening game, they lost 2-0 to Chile last night effectively ending their hopes of making the next round. Shame…all those people in office pools who were so glum ass to have drawn Spain can now make like Torres.

Spain join Italy and France as recent defending champions to go out in the group stage. Spain are the only previous winners though to lose both their first 2 games in the tournament.

“The reigning world and European champions tasted defeat for the second consecutive game in Brazil and are now out of the tournament after losing 2-0 at the Maracana Plenty of questions were raised about whether the 2014 World Cup would be a step too far for a Spain team that have dominated international football for the last six years.

Those questioning their credentials were particularly vocal after the comprehensive 5-1 defeat at the hands of Louis van Gaal’s Netherlands team, but they were confirmed after Chile heaped more misery onto the pre-tournament third favourites.” [Goal]

The reign of Spain is now going home on the plane.

Sidenote: the Netherlands vs Australia game last night was a cracker. Best game of the tournament so far.
