Facebook bought gaming virtual reality company Oculus VR for $2 billion, but what is it? [demo]
Posted by on Mar 27th, 2014

So Facebook just forked out $2 billion to buy Oculus…a virtual reality company that manufactures a headset called the Oculus Rift which many are calling the next step in gaming and the way we interact with media. For those of you that don’t know, Oculus was started in 2012 with a crowd funded Kickstarter campaign. They asked for $250,000 and got nearly $2.5 million and now just 2 years later Facebook has acquired them for a mindblowing $2 billion. Basically the Rift gives the wearer an immersive 3D experience where you feel like you’re actually in the environment projected on the screens within the device.

Now i was gonna go into a whole long explanation about how it works and the gaming possibilities, but i checked a few videos and none give you a better sense of what the Oculus Rift is capable of than this demo which includes some NSFW-ish naked people. Best bit is at 2.30 mark when he touches one of the balls on the floor and the background changes.

That’s some realistic sh*t.

Now you know.
