Huge congratulations to my mate Adrian Steirn whose portrait photograph of Nelson Mandela was sold to a New York art collector for just over R2 million, a record price for a South African photograph. If you’re a long time Life is Savage reader then you will remember that i introduced you to Adrian’s work back in 2010 when he won Best Photographer at the Africa Photographic Awards HERE and then again when he launched the 21 Icons project celebrating the achievements of 21 South Africans. The project was featured in the Sunday Times and his portrait of Mandela is the one that was sold yesterday for $200 000 which will all be donated to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital and the World Wildlife Fund.
This is the portrait.
And here’s Adrian explaining why he chose the reflection of Madiba.
Nicely done Steirno.
Go check out more of the 21 Icons project HERE. The ones of Desmond Tutu and FW De Klerk are also gonna be auctioned soon.
