A South African exam question involving the rape of a baby is now being called the most offensive exam question of all time by foreign media. The matric question has shocked and outraged South Africans while an internal moderator from the education deparment was quoted as saying the question was “valid and fair because the rape of babies is a relevant societal issue”. Pupils were asked how to maximise the horror of the rape of a baby for the audience, symbolically using a loaf of bread and a broomstick.
The department of education has stated that it would consider excluding the question from the matirc exam paper.
According to the department:
“The purpose of the question was to assess pupils’ understanding of the concept of “action metaphor”.
“The horror and aversion the audience feels is achieved without resorting to an actual rape.
“…Nowhere is it expected of the candidate to have to literally describe the actual act of raping a 9-month-old baby.” [News24]
