Initial reports on news sites around the world yesterday mentioned that up to 50 people were trapped when a shopping mall in Tongaat, north of Durban collapsed on construction workers. One person has died, 29 were injured and rescue workers are still sifting through the rubble after a roof collapsed at shopping mall under construction.
Here’s amateur video taken immediately after the incident occured.
Dunno what the deal is there with the captions, but clearly the Witness KZN are linking the collapse with controversial businessman Daniel “Jay” Singh. They mention that Singh’s family business has been cited in official reports for ‘shoddy’ work. No idea what him making donations to the ruling ANC has to do with the mall collapse though or why they felt they had to add that part.
“Rescue workers were sifting through the rubble at the shopping mall in Tongaat, north of Durban, on Tuesday night after one person died and 29 were injured – two of them critically – when a concrete slab collapsed.
It was initially reported that 50 more people were feared trapped, but the site foreman told rescue workers they may have already left for home, as the slab caved in while they were knocking off.” [News24]
