Free parking in Cape Town CBD today as parking marshals go on strike
Posted by on Oct 14th, 2013

I know it’s Monday morning, but here’s some cheerful news for those of you who are going to the Cape Town CBD today…your parking will be free. From today onwards the street parking in Cape Town central will be free while the 200 or so parking marshals go on strike over a wage dispute and breach of contract with Street Parking Solution.

According to the Cape Times, Street Parking Solution has agreed to pay the parking marshals 23.5 % commission on collected parking fees, but have not done so.

The marshals will go on strike until management of Street Parking Solution enters into negotiations and they can work out an agreement.

Now you know.

No-one will miss them.
Its ridiculous that a “make-work” project, which creates (unneeded) jobs for useless people, is faced with strikes.
I have seen a system (Singapore) where punch-cards (you punch out the date etc and place on the dashboard) does the “marshal’s” job. Cost is the price of a sheet of paper.
At the same time, I am against an employer who signed an agreement, not honoring it. However, surely there is a pro-bono source of legal aid for that?
