  • The Kimberley Diamond Cup world skateboarding grand prix is back in SA…R5 million prize pool
Posted by on Sep 27th, 2013

If you’re a skateboarder then you will no doubt be aware that this weekend the Kimberley Diamond Cup will be returning to South Africa and some of the world’s top skaters will be competing for R5 million in prize money. That’s some pretty decent tin that. 150 top pro and local skateboarders will battle it out on street, vert and mini-mega for a piece of that pie. Pros like Evan Smith, Manny Santiago and Nyjah Huston will be gunning for the $100 000 first place prize in the street championship in a head-to-head jam format.

Things kick-off today but the big event happen tomorrow and Sunday of course.

If you remember from the last year the event was called the Maloof Money Cup, but has been replaced by the Kimberley Diamond Cup this year. The new event, a partnership between the Northern Cape Provincial Government, World Skateboarding Grand Prix, and Kumba Iron Ore, was named in homage to the host city’s history as the location of South Africa’s first diamond mine and its distinction as “The Diamond City.”

Pro Skater Greg Lutzka had this to say when interviewed recently:

“To bring all these guys together in South Africa, with a world championship title and a huge prize purse, it’s gonna be an intense contest. The head-to-head jam format means lots of action, and lots of crazy tricks are gonna get thrown. This is one contest where I almost wish I could just watch because I know it’s going to be insane.  But that $100,000 prize is way too big to pass up, so I’ll definitely be hitting it hard and going all out.”

He’s lucky i don’t skate anymore. I woulda totally dominated.

Here’s some action from the guys warming up in practice yesterday.
