Former Springbok and World Cup winning coach, Jake White, is to return to South Africa as director of rugby at the Sharks. The Brumbies coach shocked Australian rugby after he quit on Monday. Apparently he is unhappy that he wasn’t picked as the Wallabies coach so asked to be released early from his contract at the Brumbies.
Welcome home Jakey.
And right there is one the main reason why White has ended up in Durban. He is close with John Smit who is currently CEO at the Sharks. Another reason is that he gets to be closer to his sons in SA.
“White joining the Sharks won’t come as a big surprise to many though, as he has a good relationship with CEO John Smit, who was Springbok captain when White coached the Boks to the 2007 World Cup title.
White’s resignation fuelled rumours that he may join Western Province after he was spotted at a training session at Newlands earlier this month.
However, WP were quick to deny the rumours on Wednesday” [Sport24]
