The UK government has requested to hold a memorial service for Nelson Mandela at Westminster Abbey and the Queen has asked to attend the service should the offer be accepted by South Africa.
It is the first time in history that a non-British citizen has been offered such a request.
Westminster Abbey is the resting place of British Royals and the coronation church of every British monarch since 1066.
“Duncan Jeffery, head of communications at Westminster Abbey, confirmed that the church had had preliminary discussions with the South African High Commission about the memorial service.
“But there are no decisions or details about who exactly would attend. We will have to wait until the time comes, otherwise it would be considered premature,” Jeffery said.
He said the South African High Commission was understandably reluctant to start detailed planning as it was a very delicate matter.” [iol]
Mmmm..wonder who will pay the bill for that?
