There is still a chance Bafana Bafana can go to the 2014 Soccer World Cup
Posted by on Jun 18th, 2013

So over the weekend SA sports fans lamented the news that Bafana Bafana won’t be going to the 2014 Soccer World Cup in Brazil after they were beaten 2-1 by Ethiopia in a qualifier. It was done and dusted, but now it has emerged that there is chance we could could still sneak in the back door after Fifa announced they are investigating Ethiopia for allowing an ineligible player to play against Botswana two weeks earlier. If that is the case, Ethiopia would lose 3 points and their lead would be cut to just 2 points in the group. If Bafana then beat Botswana and Ethiopia lose to the Central African Republic we would go to Brazil.

It’s a long shot, but how awesome would that be.

Botswana officials alerted Fifa that one of Ethiopias players recieved two yellow cards prior to their match and should have been suspended for the game.

“According to Fifa protocol, if teams are found guilty of fielding an ineligible player the match result is overturned, giving the team’s opponents a 3-0 victory and deducting any points gained by the offending team.

Should Ethiopia receive a three-point deduction they will no longer automatically qualify for the play-offs as Botswana and South Africa would still have a chance of topping the group.” [Sport24]

At the risk of jinxing it i totally see this happening!

What do they mean with ineligible player? Everyone is going on about it, but what does it mean??

Means that he was not supposed to be on the field. If you recieve two yellow cards in consecutive matches you effectively get a red card for your next game and are not allowed to play. Well thats my understanding at least. The Ethiopian player in question had recieved two prior yellow cards and wasnt supposed to play against Botswana, but he did.
