Obama’s trip to SA to cost R1 billion, includes visit to Robben Island
Posted by on Jun 14th, 2013

Ya hey…we complain about the SA government spending money on trips abroad, but i doubt it comes even close to what the US is gonna spend on President Barack Obama’s upcoming trip to South Africa, Senegal and Tanzania. A classified document outlining the details of the trip puts the price tag at $60 to $100 million. Get this though…according to the document, Obama was supposed to go on safari, but that would have required “the president’s special counterassault team to carry sniper rifles with high-caliber rounds that could neutralize cheetahs, lions or other animals if they became a threat“. So they cancelled the safari and instead the president will visit Robben Island in Cape Town.

Oh and he will have an aircraft carrier offshore with a fully staffed medical trauma center in case of an emergency.

Aaaaaand fighter jets flying over his airspace providing 24 hour protection.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand 56 support vehicles including 3 trucks filled with bullet proof glass to cover hotel windows.

Totally not over the top at all hey.

According to the document Obama will spend two nights in Johannesburg and one in Cape Town.

“The elaborate security provisions — which will cost the government tens of millions of dollars — are outlined in a confidential internal planning document obtained by The Washington Post.”

“Among the 56 vehicles for the trip are parade limousines for the president and first lady, a specialized communications vehicle for secure telephone and video connections, a truck that jams radio frequencies around the presidential motorcade, a fully loaded ambulance that can handle biological or chemical contaminants and a truck for X-ray equipment.” [Washington Post] Zuma is gonna want the same sh*t.
