Naked rhino campaigner banned from Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour
Posted by on May 30th, 2013

Steve Newman, the naked rhino campaigner, has raised nearly R60 000 all on his own for rhino conservation charities, but the organisers of the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour have decided to ban him from next years race. You will no doubt have seen Steve at various events around Cape Town raising awareness…it’s pretty hard to miss him given he’s a rather big chap and that he’s practically naked. He’s the guy who raised money for rhinos doing the naked skydive HERE , ran down Kloof Nek road naked setting off the speed camera HERE and completed the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon naked. Most recently he finished the 2013 Argus cycle tour riding naked apart from a strategically placed red horn, but the organisers have sent him an email stating he has been banned for doing so.

Ya..race organisers said his naked ride was a ‘deliberate breach of the Rules of the Cycle Tour’.

“The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust said that it received a formal complaint on the attire that Newman wore at the race, though the complainant acknowledged that she saw him after the race, not on his bicycle.” [News24]

Oh please…one complaint?

Here’s some more on the story from an interview Steve did yesterday.

Common Argus Cycle Tour organisers. Don’t be douche canoes.

Let the man cycle naked next year.

He’s helping save our rhinos.

No man. Just because you break a law “to raise awareness”, doesn’t mean it’s not breaking the law.

Mr Newman must just deal with it. Find another “zany” scheme to attract attention. But one that doesn’t ignore local bylaws this time.

Agreed Steve, but it does seem silly given that the person who complained saw him after the race was finished. Also by banning him the organiser have increased his exposure

“increased his exposure” LOL!
That’s a good thing.

But yes, now he must find another way to attract attention. A legal one.

Haha! Was wondering if you were gonna get that :) I reckon a certain bank should get involved and find a way to help him out further 😉
