  • BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) is coming to iPhone and Android for free
Posted by on May 14th, 2013

Ya hey…we all know that BlackBerry Messenger has for years been the mobile instant messaging service of choice for BlackBerry users. In SA particularly the service is widely used given that it’s included in the popular R59 monthly BIS subscription. Recent developments though by mobile carriers coupled with the increasing use of cross platform chat services like Whatsapp have likely caused BBM use to decrease, but good news for fans though. BlackBerry have announced plans to make BBM available to iOS and Android users by mid-2013. So basically BlackBerry users will be able to instant chat, share pics and video etc with iPhone, Samsung, HTC and Sony Xperia mobile devices as long as they have the BBM app installed.

Only one obstacle to make that happen….the Apple App Store and Google Play need to approve the app.

    This from BlackBerry:

“For BlackBerry, messaging and collaboration are inseparable from the mobile experience, and the time is definitely right for BBM to become a multi-platform mobile service. BBM has always been one of the most engaging services for BlackBerry customers, enabling them to easily connect while maintaining a valued level of personal privacy. We’re excited to offer iOS and Android users the possibility to join the BBM community.” [Inside BlackBerry]

Could this end Whatsapp’s reign as the instant message service of choice across different devices?

If they roll out cross-platform BBM will you use it if you have an iPhone or a Samsung Galaxy etc?

As an iPhone 3 and 4 and 5 user, I’ve never used BBM, but love WhatsApp.

What I like about WhatsApp, is you don’t need a BBM pin, once you’ve added someone to your contacts, you can WhatsApp them straight away too.

I’ll probably install BBM when it’s available, just to see what Ive been missing out on, but Ill probably stick to the Facebook app for sharing statuses and photos – one social media app keeps me busy enough!
