Ok so after several people sent me this story i’m gonna post it because the rest of the world is looking at us and wondering why a 15 year old Afrikaans girl, living in a shack in a Gauteng informal settlement, and who has won 27 athletics gold medals has to get funding from Americans to realise her dream of being a star athlete.
The story of Irene Van Niekerk is making news around the world after Dr Skip Moen from the US posted an interview with her a few days ago which resulted in Americans donating more than R20,000 towards her athletics future.
Here is the video Dr Moen posted.
That’s quite a story.
It even made it onto the SASCOC Road To Rio site.
“When the story was forwarded to me, I saw a young athlete with raw talent who has won 32 gold medals over the past two years and I decided to investigate the matter,” Gideon Sam, president of the South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) said.”
“Sam said that he will discuss the matter with a top coach at the University of Johannesburg and will also investigate whether she qualifies to run in Paralympic events. Irene missed out on the South African championships this year as she cut her toe just before the event.” [Road to Rio]
Ok so i wasn’t really gonna comment on this story because i would like to help that girl out and make her realise her dream (as im sure many of you do), but that guy….seriously that guy. I can’t be the only one who’s giving that guy side-eyes. That part of his intro where he said ‘the black government of South Africa has a reverse apartheid programme in place, legally abusing a white population’?
[thanks Rob and everyone else who sent it in]
