R140 billion new city to be built just 25km from Cape Town city centre [pic]

I totally thought this was a delayed April Fools joke, but apparently not. An entirely new city is being planned just 25km from the Cape Town city centre. It will cost a staggering R140 billion and the proposed development will include 200 000 homes, 33 hospitals/clinics, hundreds of schools and have a population of nearly a million people.

It’s called Wescape and the site would roughly be between 9.2 km by 4.8km in size and will be located along the N7 Highway on the West Coast.

And here’s a video explaining the concept…with some dramatic Game of Thrones music and all.

“Touted as the biggest urban development in the country, Wescape will provide homes to close to one million people just 25km from the city centre. The development is the brainchild of a Cape Town company, CommuniTgrow.

The company has proposed to build 200000 homes for lower-income earners, 33 hospitals and clinics, 370 libraries and community halls, 415 schools and 15 sports complexes on 3100 hectares of land near Melkbosstrand.” [TimesLive]

Well as it stands  the project is up for government approval. The developers aren’t taking it lightly apparently and have put in some serious work. The website HERE has a pretty extensive 400 page plan available to the public if you wanna know more.

You reckon it will happen?

“At this point Wescape is just a proposal. No application has been received by the department. What they are probably alluding to is what the process should be.”

It’ll be interesting to watch and see what happens. Mixed feelings about the whole thing.

Just looking at the road infrastructure – they are working on the assumption that the R300 will be extended. As far as I know those plans have been stalling since the road was first completed. Just that is an enormous undertaking as it is a very long piece of road that has to be built from scratch. On top of that it will be extended through an affluent part of Durbanville, and I am sure there will be a lot of resistance from home owners, let alone the environmental impact. And that is just on 1 road. Can you imagine all the hoops these guys will have to jump through before they’ve even shoveled the first soil. And then they’ll still need to finance it somehow as well.

Parklands’ had issues with infrastructure around access roads, so I cant imagine this well get the go ahead if the infrastructure isn’t in place.

Never say never, but I’d be surprised if this happened in our lifetime.

I wonder what this could mean for Cape Town as a whole. The migration alone to cpt would be hectic. This may take a very long time and they would need a LOT of international backing and investments for this.
I wonder though if they would start a new university or would UCT or UWC open a WesCape campus?
Another thing is that they definitely need a new name for the city.. WesCape doesn’t sound to good.

It will probably work, the influx of Gautengers is huge, and they have to stay somewhere. Despite my massive skepticism the whole century city development seems to work on some level.

But I for one will try my level best not to ever live there. Windswept plains of nothingness with dust, tumbleweeds,Nigerians and strip malls. sounds like Pretoria East with more wind.
