Drinking and driving in SA – let’s have that chat and end the stupidity
Posted by on Apr 12th, 2013

Ok so here’s the thing. I’m gonna sound like i’m preaching, but bear with me because it’s something that’s been bugging me for quite some time. It blows my mind at the stupidity and absolute recklessness of the amount of people i know that drink and drive in South Africa…it needs to stop. These are seemingly intelligent people and yet i simply cannot understand why they would make such a poor decision. We all know someone who does it…some on a regular basis and for years i’ve had the conversation on why this attitude in SA exists.

Whatever the reason…the problem of drinking and driving in Cape Town and this country must end.

So i’m throwing my full support behind the new Drive Dry initiative and i’m calling on all you fine people to do the same, make a pledge and declare your intention to stop drinking and driving or man up and be the designated driver. Let’s start by changing the behaviour of those close to us and move onto those around us. We can make a difference people.

Why would you risk it..why?

In the past the award winning Drive Dry campaigns have used hard-hitting truths like the Papa Wag Vir Jou ads and now they are taking the next step and asking people to commit to responsible behaviour and make the choice between ‘drinking and not driving’ or ‘driving and not drinking’.

So here’s what i want from you.

  • Visit the Drive Dry Facebook page HERE and participate in the new Facebook app known simply as “The Drive”.

  • Simply logon onto the website  and pledge online you will “drink and not drive” or “drive and not drink”.

Can you do that..of course you can. And i know you will because it’s about damn time we put an end to clearly drunk people saying “Dude..I’m fine i swear. I’m not drunk“ before ending up behind the wheel.

Now by making your declaration you’ll also stand a chance to win some pretty cool stuff. Check it.

I’ve made my declaration.

Now go make yours.

Seriously…the stupidity of people drinking and driving must stop and we can make it happen as long as we change people’s way of thinking. It’s not cool to drink and drive and it kills people. Don’t let it happen to you or your friends.

Do it.

I’m not defending drinking and driving, but I do want to make one point.

A lot of the responsibility lies on the shoulders of the South African government. If the government built a safe and reliable public transport system then a lot of the drinking and driving would stop. I live in Thailand and I never drink and drive. Why? There is plenty of reliable and safe public transport for me to use, so the thought of drinking and driving is insane.

I know it wouldn’t end the occurrence of drinking and driving. Nothing will. There will always be stupid people out there, but at least the intelligent people out there would have an alternative which would help stop them from making stupid decisions like taking their car out when they know they’ll be drinking.

I think start to impound the cocroches in the road. Like in Phillip yO u cnt drive safe there the drivers they don’t have licences they promote corruption to traffic cops. Put more road blocks everyday everywhere fo two weeks nd check the no of crime in roads.
Let the pernalt or fine for drinking and driving to start from R6000 sport fine without impound the vehicles no mercy
