Yesterday Forbes released its annual list for the richest people on the planet and for the second year in a row the Mexican telecoms magnate Carlos Slim is the wealthiest human with an estimated worth of $73 billion. Bill Gates is in second spot with Amancio Ortega the owner of Zara in third. Of more interest to me though is how the richest South Africans stack up against the rest of the world’s billionaires.
Johann Rupert and his family are the highest ranked South Africans with an estimated net worth of $6.6 billion. His fortune has grown an astounding 30% over the course of the past year, due largely to the thriving fortunes of his Swiss-based luxury goods outfit, Compagnie Financiere Richemont.
Here’s the rest of the Saffa’s with ridiculous amounts of coin.
Interestingly, the youngest billionaire is 28 yr old Dustin Moskovitz, the co-founder of Facebook. His net worth sits at $3.3 billion.
Also the name of 8th richest person in the world is Li Ka-shing. No spice.
